Nowadays, nearly every shops have a number of cameras installed and hidden. It has been a widespread method to police to prevent various of criminals that might occur sometime. But some people think their human rights are violated because they are often being watched.

The general public concede that we need surveillance cameras so that people can enjoy a safer shopping experience. This methodology is also welcome by management of supermarkets as it seems to be an effective way to whittle back criminal rate. Surveillance cameras are already being used in almost every field today, such as petrol station, grocery store, bank, even the speed and red light camera on the road. Police officers say it is much easier for them to get evidence now by simply rewinding the tape and then get what they want.

However, this kind of managerial mechanism has been considered to be opposed to protection of human rights. It is brought up to a hot discussion today since the Road Transportation Authority had installed recently more speed and red light cameras to monitor road users. Some think the Government to do so is just to gain more profit. Some have questioned the legality of these surveillance cameras. To avoid lawsuits, the Government had put up notice board several metres ahead of cameras to get road users notified before they enter the checking-zone.

Likewise, it is very common now to see a warning notice of surveillance camera in shops and supermarkets, deterring shoppers from stealing and robbing. The shop owners have expressed no reluctance to equip a surveillance camera in their shops, even with a high cost. They argued that it is for the benefit of the shops.
